The cello has long been a favorite instrument of mine, for its wonderful voice and spiritual quality. I think of Yo-Yo Ma or Eugene Friesen’s cello music, and I am awed. Over the years, I’ve been involved in making my own kinds of portraits. When I paint people, I’m not trying to achieve a likeness. Rather, I hope to say something about their spirit, their way of being, and their life force. I paint the inside and the outside—a whole set of circumstances, a rich environment. With “The Cellist,” I wanted to portray my feelings about this beautiful instrument and those players who really take their music beyond words into another realm.
