“Jeri Griffith mixes two distinct tones of voice in this piece; she begins on a level I might call ‘inspired,’ with speculative and cerebral reflections on her connection with the universe. This kind of writing is dangerous stuff, in that a writer can too easily float off into the ether, retaining no connection with the material world, and losing readers because they cannot identify with the wispy thoughts. As a constant reader, I’m intrigued by imaginative or spiritual writing, but I always look for a tangible connection to my own life and circumstances. . . This author, wisely I think, quickly moves from theory back to homely details readers can recognize from their own experiences, and draws us back to everyday reality.”
