“Jeri Griffith mixes two distinct tones of voice in this piece; she begins on a level I might call ‘inspired,’ with speculative and cerebral reflections on her connection with the universe. This kind of writing is dangerous stuff, in that a writer can too easily float off into the ether, retaining no connection with the material world, and losing readers because they cannot identify with the wispy thoughts. As a constant reader, I’m intrigued by imaginative or spiritual writing, but I always look for a tangible connection to my own life and circumstances. . . This author, wisely I think, quickly moves from theory back to homely details readers can recognize from their own experiences, and draws us back to everyday reality.”

—comments from Linda Hasselstrom, judge for the Iowa Woman Essay Contest (1995), who awarded Jeri’s “Lena’s World” first place. Linda Hasselstrom’s 16th book is Write Now, Here’s How – Insights from Six Decades of Writing.
